RBS bonus shows Cameron’s promises about reining-in excessive bonuses at state-owned banks or using shareholder power utterly worthless – Leslie

26 January 2012

Chris LeslieChris Leslie MP, Labour’s Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury, commenting on the announcement tonight that the chief executive of RBS will receive a bonus worth £963,000, said:

“We now know that ministerial claims that the RBS board is contractually bound for years over bonuses were false. The board decides bonuses on an annual basis – and the biggest shareholder at the bank is the Government.

“Nobody doubts that Stephen Hester has done some important things at RBS, but what this award shows is David Cameron’s promises about reining-in excessive bonuses at state-owned banks or using shareholder power have proved to be utterly worthless.

“Indeed, anyone who thinks it is acceptable to award a bonus of almost £1 million on top of a basic salary of £1.2 million in these tough times is desperately out of touch with millions of people who are struggling to make ends meet.

“Instead of fiddling at the margins of this issue, David Cameron should take proper action on excessive executive pay as well as agree to Labour’s call for a new tax on bankers’ bonuses this year to fund 100,000 jobs for young people.”

Here are highlights from Thursday’s Analyst Blog:

Diverging Trends in U.S. Oil Demand

The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed that crude stockpiles increased more than expected on higher imports. However, the agency’s report further revealed that product demand rose, as a result of which both gasoline and distillate stocks fell from their previous week levels. Meanwhile, refinery utilization rate was down by 1.5%.

The Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) Petroleum Status Report – which contains data for the previous week ending Friday, outlines information regarding the weekly change in petroleum inventories held and produced by the U.S., both locally and abroad.

The report provides an overview of the level of reserves and their movements, thereby helping investors understand the demand/supply dynamics of petroleum products. It is an indicator of current oil prices and volatility that affect businesses of companies engaged in the oil and refining industry, such as ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE:XOMNews), Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVXNews), ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COPNews), Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE:VLONews) and Tesoro Corp. (NYSE:TSONews).

Analysis of the Data

Crude Oil: The federal government’s EIA report revealed that crude inventories rose by 3.56 million barrels for the week ending January 20, 2012, after shrinking by 3.44 million barrels last week.

Analysts surveyed by Platts had expected oil stocks to go up some 700,000 barrels. Lower refinery utilization rates and surging imports led to the stockpile buildup with the world’s biggest oil consumer.

In particular, crude inventories at the Cushing terminal in Oklahoma – the key delivery hub for U.S. crude futures – grew by 374,000 barrels from last week’s 26-month low level to 28.65 million barrels. Stocks reached an all-time high of 41.90 million barrels in April last year.

At 334.77 million barrels, current crude supplies are 1.7% below the year-earlier level, but are in the upper limit of the average for this time of the year. The crude supply cover was up from 22.5 days in the previous week to 22.9 days. In the year-ago period, the supply cover was 23.4 days.

Gasoline: Supplies of gasoline decreased for the first time in four weeks as demand edged higher. Domestic gasoline consumption slid 2.2% to 8 million barrels a day during the previous week, the lowest since September 2001.

The 390,000 barrels-dip – contrary to projections for a 2.2 million barrels build – took gasoline stockpiles down to 227.13 million barrels. The existing inventory level of the most widely used petroleum product is 1.3% below the year-earlier levels and is in the upper limit of the average range.

Distillate: Distillate fuel inventories (including diesel and heating oil) were down by 2.46 million barrels last week, significantly above analyst expectations for a 300,000 barrels decrease. The decline in distillate fuel supplies – after four consecutive weeks of growth – could be attributed to rising demand and lower imports.

At 145.55 million barrels, distillate supplies are 12.2% below the year-ago level and are in the middle of the average range for this time of the year.

Refinery Rates: Refinery utilization was down 1.5% from the prior week at 82.2%. Analysts were expecting the refinery run rate to decline 0.5% to 83.2%.

Here are highlights from Thursday’s Analyst Blog:

Thursday’s Good News Started with Caterpillar

The deluge of this morning’s favorable economic and earnings reports should help stocks sustain Wednesday’s Fed-inspired gains. We got positive weekly Initial Jobless Claims numbers and a better-than-expected Durable Goods Orders reading. On the earnings front, Caterpillar’s (NYSE:CATNews) blowout results will likely ease some of the lingering concerns about weakness in China and other emerging markets.

Of this morning’s economic releases, the most important number was the roughly in-line Jobless Claims reading, showing a gain of 21K to 377K. Please recall that we saw an unusually big drop last week, likely resulting from complications in seasonally adjusting the data at this time of the year. Today’s reading goes some way towards correcting that. The four-week average, which smooths out the week-to-week fluctuation, dropped by 2.5K to 377.5K, maintaining its downtrend of recent weeks.

In other economic releases, the December Durable Goods Orders report came in better than expected, highlighting that corporate capital expenditures will remain a growth driver for the economy despite the expiration of accelerated depreciation expense. Headline Durable Goods Orders increased 3% in December, above the 2% consensus expectation, while the November headline gain of 3.9% was revised upwards to 4.3%.

The ‘core’ Durable Goods Orders reading — which strips out defense and aircraft orders given their inherent ‘lumpiness’ on a month-to-month basis — also came in better than expected at a gain of 2.1%. This compares to the weak ‘core’ reading in November of a 1.2% drop.

On the earnings front, Caterpillar beat big, blowing past expectations and coming out with Apple-like numbers. Driving Caterpillar’s record quarterly results was continued resilient demand for the company’s products in international markets, which should help ease some of the concerns about slowing demand in key emerging markets.

Importantly, the company guided higher, both for revenue as well earnings, which should help cause positive estimate revisions in the coming days. 3M (NYSE:MMMNews) beat on EPS and revenue, with strong demand in industrial and transportation end-markets offsetting weakness in consumer electronics. Eaton Corp (NYSE:ETNNews), another diversified industrial operator, missed both EPS and revenue expectations.

AT&T (NYSE:TNews) missed consensus EPS by a penny, though its revenue came out ahead of expectations. The company had a number of one-off items, including termination fees for the failed T-Mobile deal. The EPS miss notwithstanding, the company had an overall good report in terms of new smart-phone subscribers, cash flows, and share buyback plans.

Netflix (NasdaqGS:NFLXNews) came out ahead of expectations after the close on Wednesday as the company was able to reverse the impact of its recent mis-steps by making strong subscriber gains.

Press Pass – Monday's Views on Sunday's News

January 27th, 2012

GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich sat down with David Gregory this Sunday, and made news discussing his win in the South Carolina primary and the road forward for his campaign.

A New York Times article about the race in the Florida noted that “For some veterans in the party, Mr. Gingrich’s victory increased the very possibility that some of them fear — that the combative and volatile Mr. Gingrich with whom they had worked in Washington would become the new face of the party.” But, the Times wrote, “Speaking on the NBC News program “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning, Mr. Gingrich acknowledged those concerns and said he wore them as a badge of honor as he pushed forward toward the nomination.” TIME Magazine highlighted Gingrich’s anti-establishment stance on MTP as well: “‘The Establishment is right to be worried about a Gingrich nomination,’ the winner of the South Carolina Republican primary, declared Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press.”

National Review Online also covered Sunday’s Gingrich interview, writing: “On Meet the Press this morning, Newt Gingrich defended himself against the three main criticisms of his candidacy: his involvement with Freddie Mac, his attacks on Bain Capital, and his personal life.” Watch Gingrich’s comments below:

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a prominent supporter of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, was also on Meet the Press this Sunday. Politico reported, “Christie, a key Romney surrogate in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, blasted Gingrich on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ for his ethics violation fine and losing the speakership in the House, saying that ‘sometimes past is prologue.’”

Christie’s home state newspaper, the New Jersey Star-Ledger, also noted the governor’s spirited MTP appearance: “Gov. Chris Christie went on full attack-dog mode Sunday, calling Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich an “embarrassment for the party” on national television hours after the former House speaker defeated Mitt Romney in the South Carolina primary.” You can watch David’s interview with Christie here:

The Government is only on course for borrowing targets that are already off track – Reeves

24 January 2012

Rachel ReevesRachel Reeves MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in response to today’s public sector finances figures, said:

“The Government is only on course for borrowing targets that are already a staggering £158 billion off track, meaning David Cameron and George Osborne’s promise to balance the books by 2015 now lies in tatters.

“This £158 billion of extra borrowing is more than £6,500 for every household in the country. And it’s the bill for economic failure and a growing dole queue, rather than to help create jobs and support the economy through difficult times.

“By pushing unemployment up to a 17 year high and choking off the recovery over a year ago, well before the recent eurozone crisis, the Government’s reckless decision to raise taxes and cut spending further and faster has completely backfired.

“Of course we need tough decisions on tax, spending and pay to get the deficit down but it’s also vital we get people off the dole and into work. More people out of work on benefit just makes it harder to get the deficit down. It doesn’t make economic sense. The Government needs to change course and adopt Labour’s five point plan for jobs, to kick-start our flatlining economy and so get the deficit down in a fairer, better way.”

The latest news on today’s hottest celebrities …

SIMON COWELL: British television personality Simon Cowell says he hasn’t seen his fiancee Mezhgan Hussainy since before Christmas and likely won’t wed her as planned.

Cowell met Hussainy in 2003 when she worked as a makeup artist for “American Idol.” They began dating in 2009 and got engaged in February 2010.

“It’s quite a complicated relationship. We have had a break from each other and we are still incredibly close. I’m vulnerable. It’s not on, it’s not off, it’s somewhere in the middle. I don’t know if I will ever get married, but I am happy,” Cowell told the Sunday Mirror in London.

He also said he got carried away when he described Hussainy as “the one” during an interview on “Piers Morgan‘s Life Stories.”

“I have been pretty good about not talking about my private stuff but I got caught up in the moment,” Cowell said.

JANE CARREY: Actor Jim Carrey’s 24-year-old daughter Jane has auditioned for “American Idol” in San Diego.

She will be seen performing Bonnie Raitt‘s “Something to Talk About” in Sunday’s edition of the vocal competition show.

UsMagazine.com quoted her as saying she didn’t want special treatment because of who her dad is.

“The last name definitely helps and hurts. There’s this pressure to be better because if I make it somewhere, I run the risk of people saying, ‘You only got there because of your name,’” Jane Carrey said before her performance. “I’m here to make my place in the world.”

“Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez reminded Carrey she met her when she and her father both worked on the sketch comedy series “In Living Color” in the 1990s, UsMagazine.com said.

“You remember me? I was one of the Fly Girls!” Lopez said.

BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD: Hollywood filmmaker Ron Howard announced on Twitter his daughter, actress Bryce Dallas Howard, gave birth to a little girl of her own.

Beatrice Jean Howard-Gabel was born Thursday. She weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces, TVGuide.com reported.

The actress married “Fringe” actor Seth Gabel in 2006. They are also the parents of a 4-year-old son named Theo.

“Bryce and baby B are spectacular,” Ron Howard posted on Twitter late Saturday. “daddy Seth & brother Theo are beaming ear to ear.”

Bryce Dallas Howard’s film credits include “The Village,” “Lady in the Water,” “50/50″ and “The Help.”

TOM RILEY: British actor Tom Riley is to play Renaissance-era artist Leonardo da Vinci in the new drama series, Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Productions said.

Riley’s casting is the first announced for the historical fantasy series, which was penned by David S. Goyer, co-writer of “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” and writer of the upcoming “Man of Steel.”

Starz will premiere the eight-episode da Vinci series in the United States in 2013. BBC Worldwide will distribute the series in international territories.

“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill,” show-runner Goyer said in a statement Monday. “Leonardo had to be smart, witty, and incredibly confident — without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. Tom came in and was able to effortlessly combine all of those elements. As soon as he finished his audition, we knew we’d found our man.”

“Da Vinci is a near mythic figure in history that fascinates people to this day,” said Starz’s managing director, Carmi Zlotnik. “It is quite an undertaking to bring to life a role that comes with so many preconceived notions. Tom showed us that there are many dimensions to this man yet to be explored, and, at the same time, make him believable, surprising and unique to a worldwide audience.”

“Tom is a fabulously charismatic, intelligent and versatile actor,” said Jane Tranter, head of BBC Worldwide Productions. “His audition displayed an unabashed energy that we are excited to see unleashed in his performance as a re-imagined artistic genius in 15th century Florence.”

Riley is best known for starring in the London stage productions of “My City,” “The Vertical Hour” and “The Woman Before,” and Broadway’s “Arcadia,”

He also appeared in TV’s “Monroe,” “Bouquet of Barbed Wire” and “Lost in Austen,” and his films include “A Few Days In September,” “I Want Candy” and “Happy Ever Afters.”
